Family Chowder’s Mission:
Family Chowder exists to promote family preservation in Greater Cleveland because families build people and people build communities. We are dedicated to sponsoring and connecting high risk families to affordable respite and other resources needed to enhance a positive family experience.
Who are high risk families?
- Disabled family member
- Family member with a physical or mental illness
- Death of a family member
- High conflict or high risk behavior
- In Court System or family member re-entering society
There are over 500,000 families living in the Greater Cleveland area. At any given time, it is likely that families are experiencing any one or more “high risk” situations.
Family Chowder is building a site that we hope will be a resource and support for you and your family.
We are already being asked why the name Family Chowder? Like Chowder, the exact definition of family and list of ingredients is an ambiguous subject with much heated debate by some. Family, like chowder, is interesting. When invited for chowder you never quite know what you might get. Same with families.
We hope you enjoy the stories we share and find that any tidbits of information we pass on to you is of use and makes your life better for it. One category you might never see on this site is Health and Wellness. The reason for this is that our entire site is dedicated to the mental and physical well being of individuals and families.
You will find healthy but tasty recipes, fun activities that will get you moving, a lot of other activities and tips to give you peace of mind, plus discussion on some relevant topics to keep you current in the health watch world.
You will also find some faith and political discussions. Religion is part of many family traditions. Same with politics. There are lots of religious practices and we will be sharing them. While Family Chowder not have a political agenda to promote, we will provide educational pieces in regards to public family policies so our Family Chowder families can be in the know and make informed decisions.

About the founder, Linda Justus:
Some of you have asked what Family Chowder is. Many years ago I had a dream to do my part in putting an end to domestic violence by establishing a foundation to provide free/low cost retreats for families. It is my passion and I am inspired by my faith. I have a degree in Family Studies, and two in Business. Over the years I have written articles and even co-wrote a book with my ex husband to help families facing a diagnosis of cancer. I have facilitated workshops for conflict resolution and communication. I am also a trained mediator. On top of this, I organized scout activities for years. I also founded the largest community built park in Southern Utah, Park Discovery – place where families can play together. Talk about fun with a purpose!
Even with all this, I was not immune to some serious difficulties within my own family. With all my training and education, It still took everything I had, and the involvement of some key people, before we experienced any sort of positive outcome. I was at a loss for a long time. I gave up on my dream and focused on making ends meet for my family.
Then one day, with the encouragement of a very good friend, I started a blog which quickly morphed into the beginnings of what I really want to do. Help families. At first I thought that I was not qualified to help other families because of all the issues my own family struggles with, along with a lack of resources. But like a nagging child, that small voice kept telling me that the fact I have struggles makes me very qualified, and with a little faith, I will be able to reach the people that need to be reached.
With that, The Family Chowder Foundation was born, a registered nonprofit with the State of Ohio. Your cause might be to save rescue puppies or to stop climate change. My cause is to fight for families. I am taking my education and my experience and my faith and I am starting with the leaders of the family. The moms and dads, and the caregivers. Family Chowder activities are for respite purposes, and they are free unless announced otherwise.
There are also links to free resources from parental guidance to financial assistance on the Family Chowder’s Resource Page, along with a few blog articles and inspirations. Family Chowder is currently staffed by myself and the boys, who really do make a contribution with advice and tech support. Zach designed the Family Chowder logo. I also have had several other inspired volunteers help out along the way on smaller projects.
My fight is for families. If you would like to join me and be apart of Family Chowder, how great that would be. If you would like to join in the fun activities that would be fantastic, Family Chowder is here for you.
